Cupar Hearts v BurntIsland Shipyard 2 - 0

22nd January 2000

Cupar Hearts were at home to BurntIsland in this the third round of the McEwan's Fife Cup, played in pretty near perfect conditions. The home team started off in a very determined manner showing some of the best football they have displayed for some time, with every player contributing to the team effort. They dominated in all areas of the pitch and only some excellent saves from the Shipyard 'keeper and off target shooting kept the scores level.

Hearts were running rampant and creating chance after chance without converting any until the 28th minute when from a free kick on the edge of the goal box Ritchie peeled off from the defensive wall, leaving a gap which Kidd gratefully obliged by passing the ball into the right hand corner of the net.

Hearts finished the half well on top and thoroughly merited their lead. The second half saw BurntIsland come more into the game and it was a much more even contest. They tried hard with-out ever really pressurising the home defence. Some of the tackling was getting quite fierce with one or two off the ball incidents missed by the referee. The game as a contest was finished with just five minutes left. Matthews made a great pass by flicking the ball over the defence for McAinish to run onto and beat the keeper with a well-placed shot. With just minutes to go there was a nasty incident, when a melee ensued and two players from each side were red carded. This unfortunate incident should not detract from what was a tremendous performance by Hearts, which puts them into the quarterfinal draw.

Hearts team: Rann, Kidd, Dailly, Sheach, Murray, Ritchie, Anderson, Forsyth, Provan, Matthews, McAinish.
Subs: Grubb, Peebles, Richards, Wiltshire and B. Hastie.

Cupar Hearts v Kettle United 2 - 0

29th January 2000

Cupar welcomed Kettle United to Duffus Park on Saturday in this league match in a local derby, which in recent years has produced closely contested games. Conditions were not conducive for good football with a gale force wind blowing strongly from the west.

Heart's chose to play down wind for the first half and pushed forward at every opportunity without really threatening to score. Indeed the better football was being played by the Kettle side who created several good chances with one in particular which was only saved by a goal line clearance by Paton. At the end a dull first half the game lacked any real atmosphere. Both sets of players had tried valiantly to make a game of it.

However, the second half was quickly sparked into life when within minutes of the restart Kettle took the lead. They broke out of' defence passed the ball skilfully down the field before giving it the left winger who moved inside and bulleted the ball into the net.
Hearts tried to get back into the game without making any impression. It wasn't until the 75th minute that the home team got some well needed inspiration from Matthews who turned smartly in the Kettle box and was bought down by a defender. The same player picked himself up and scored from well taken penalty. Hearts suddenly began to show belief in themselves and pushed forward searching for the winner, and went ahead when Ritchie was given a great through ball, outstripped the defence, and coolly slotted it past the keeper.

All credit to Kettle, they never gave in and fought back putting the home defence under pressure. Then with everyone convinced the final whistle was well overdue, Kettle scored the equaliser when following a goalmouth stramash, Hearts failed to clear the ball and it broke to a Kettle player who buried it in the back of' the net. Seconds later the referee blew the final whistle. In a game played in terrible conditions, both sets of players deserved credit for their efforts.

Hearts - McDonald, Kidd, Dailly, Sheach, Murray, Ritchie, Grubb, Anderson, Matthews, McAinish, Paton.

Cupar Hearts v Campbelltown Pupils 2-2

Sat 5th February 2000

Hearts entertained Campbelltown Pupils in this 5th round of the Famous Grouse Scottish Cup at Duffus Park on another day when a gale force wind made conditions very difficult for both sides. From the kick off, Pupils, playing downwind began to pile on the pressure early, taking full advantage of the prevailing wind.

McDonald in the Heart's goal had to low dive and managed to make several great saves to keep Hearts in the game. Hearts were also playing some neat football and making chances without making any headway. The bubble burst ill the 31st minute, when Pupils took the lead, in somewhat bizarre fashion, when what appeared to be a hopeful punt forward from their own half, flew over the defence deceiving the keeper when it bounced high over his head into the net. 0-1.

Four minutes later, Pupils went further ahead when from a well flighted cross, their centre-forward headed well away from McDonald into the goal. 0-2. Despite Hearts trying desperately hard to get back into the game before the interval, the half ended with Pupils leading 2-0.

The second half started with Hearts looking a much more determined outfit. Right from the start they pushed forward at every opportunity and lifted the whole tempo of the game. They were now keeping the Pupils defence hemmed into their own goal box and only some fine goalkeeping and desperate defending denied Hearts a goal. Then in the 55th minute, Hearts made the breakthrough their play warranted when from a Ritchie cross, Matthews headed home. 1-2. Hearts were now unrelenting, piling on the pressure making numerous chances. Then, in the 65th minute they got their deserved equaliser when Provan from outside the box, with the keeper charging out towards him, flicked the ball with the outside of his left boot over the keeper's head into the net. 2-2.

The game was now being played at a frantic pace with both teams trying valiantly to get the winner, however both keepers were on top form and the game finished all square. This was a great advert for amateur football with both sets of players putting on a fine display and the referee allowing the game to flow, handled the game in an exemplary fashion. Hearts now have to travel to Campbelltown, next Saturday (12th February) for a game, which will be played to a finish. (Bus leaves Duffus Park at 7. a.m.)

Campbelltown Pupils v Cupar Hearts Replay 0 - 2

Sat 19th February 2000

Cupar Hearts made the long journey to Cambletown for the fifth round of the Famous Grouse Scottish Cup replay. The conditions were quite difficult with a very soft pitch and sporadic wintry weather, with a blizzard of snow and hail, and a persistent strong wind blowing.

The game started in sprightly fashion with both sides taking no prisoners. With only 15 minutes played, disaster struck for Hearts when keeper I McDonald sustained a serious injury to his left ankle, as he bravely dived at the feet of an advancing Pupil player and had to be carried off. Captain Alan Forsyth took his place in goal and Grubb came on as substitute.

This incident briefly stunned the Hearts side but they quickly rallied their troops and in the 3Oth minute Ritchie put them into the lead, when following a goalmouth scramble, the ball broke out to him and he coolly slotted it home.

Hearts were playing some great football and made several good opportunities to score but were held by a combination of superb defending and fine goalkeeping. The half finished with Hearts deservedly ahead but were well aware that the game was far from over. The second half began with the expected blitz from the Pupils but Hearts held firm and gradually came into their own again putting the Pupils defence under pressure. Just when it appeared that the game was becoming a more evenly balanced affair, Hearts went further ahead in the 67th minute with a marvellous goal from Rab Matthews.

He wriggled his way through the home defence and with great panache he rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the net. The home team now threw caution to the wind, piling forward and tackling vigorously, the latter resulting in one of their players being sent off for persistent fouling.

The Hearts' defence stood firm, and the nearest Pupils came to scoring was when there was a goalmouth stramash with almost every player there having a kick at the ball before it was eventually cleared. Hearts finished the game well on top and it was a deliriously happy if somewhat tired group of players that trooped off the park.

There were no failures in this Hearts side with everyone giving their all but a special mention has to be given to Alan Forsyth who took over in goal and kept a clean sheet, with at times some unconventional keeping.

This was a great performance from all concerned with Hearts entering the draw for the last 32 of the Scottish Cup

Hearts: McDonald, Kidd, Dailly, Sheach, Murray, Ritchie, Anderson, Forsyth, Provan, Matthews and McAinish.
Subs: Grubb, Paton, Honeyman and Houston

Cupar Hearts v Balgonie Scotia 3 - 1

Sat 19th February 2000

It was back to league business on Saturday against Balgonie Scotia, after the high of the Scottish Cup the previous week. There was also the return of Gordon Laing in the Hearts goal.

The game started in a brisk fashion from both sides with Balgonie making most of the early running. Gradually Hearts began to settle, stringing their passes together, creating several openings for goal opportunities.

Eventually the breakthrough came in the 15th minute when from a corner on the right side Murray headed home for a well taken goal 1 - 0. The home side were now dominating the play when suddenly Balgonie came back with a bang in the 26th minute when from a long ball from their defence completely fooled the the hearts back four and a Balgonie player reacted quickest collecting the ball and slotting it past the advancing Laing 1 - 1.

This spurred the Cupar side into action and just 2 minutes later they were back in front when Matthews latched onto a through ball steadied himself and beat the keeper with a well placed shot 2 - 1.
Hearts continued to have most of the play but could not extend their lead, the half finishing with them well on top.

The second half began brightly for the Cupar side when within 2 minutes of the re-start McAinish put them further ahead when his looping shot beat the Balgonie keeper and dropped into the net 3 - 1.

Hearts went on to totally dominate the play making numerous chances without extending their lead, there were many near things but some poor finishing and some good goal keeping from the Balgonie keeper kept the score down. However this was a good all round performance from Hearts and with three enforced changes in their ranks, this did not detract from what has been a great unbeaten run. Those incoming players all came through this game with credit.

Cupar: Laing, Kidd, Dailly, Shaech, Murray, Ritchie,Grubb, Paton, Provan McAinish, Matthews.
Subs: Richards, Honeyman, Peebles, Wiltshire, Farrell.

BurntIsland Shipyard v Cupar Hearts 0-0

26th February 2000

Cupar travelled to BurntIsland on Saturday for this League match against our League Cup Final opponents. The weather was fair but the pitch was in very poor condition with a stiff wind blowing.

The game began with Shipyard playing downwind and they used this to their advantage. Hearts were hemmed into their own half for much of the early part of the game with their defence under extreme pressure and were very fortunate to escape going behind in the 10th minute when with everyone beaten only the woodwork saved the day as the ball came off the post and was scrambled clear.

The Cupar side began to come more into the game after this and for a short period put the home defence under the cosh but never really threatened the goal. Then just when this was becoming a more even contest Hearts conceded a penalty when a home player was needlessly brought down on the edge of the box, however Laing, in the Hearts goal, brought off a wonder save when he anticipated the shot and dived down to his left, scooped the ball onto the bar for it then to be hurriedly cleared away.

Shipyard continued to dominate for most of the first half but the Hearts defence and goalkeeper stood firm. The half finished all square thanks to some resolute defending and brilliant goal keeping.

At the restart Hearts now began to show some form, they lifted the tempo of the game and were now taking the game to the Shipyard, creating chances galore but the home defence continued to defy them. There were several good opportunities to score, principally in the 70th minute when Matthews was put clear on the right by Ritchie but his shot flew well over the bar. Also in the dying minutes of the game Forsyth twice came close with two headed chances in succession one going over the bar and the other just shaving the post.

The game ended in a draw with both sides feeling that they should have won this game. On reflection, given the state of the pitch a draw was a fair outcome.

Hearts: Laing; Kidd; Dailly; Sheach; Murray; Peebles; Grubb; Paton; Provan; McAinish; Matthews.
Subs: Ritchie; Forsyth; B. Hastie; Farrell; Wiltshire.

Kennoway v Cupar Hearts 0-0

4th March 2000

Cupar made the short trip to Kennoway on Saturday 4th March for this 4th round tie in the McEwans sponsored Fife Cup against the local side. The weather was fair but very cold with a slight breeze blowing and the pitch was in reasonable condition. There has always been a fierce rivalry between these two sides and today was to prove no different.

Hearts started this match in a sprightly fashion, playing slick passing football keeping the home defence penned into their own half. The best of the early play resulted in a well taken volley from Anderson, after a cross from Provan on the left, Which had the keeper beat only for the ball to rebound off the post. Minutes later Forsyth had a shot on the run, saved and McAinish saw his strike go just past the post.

The home defence and their keeper had to be alert on more than one occasion and were given no respite by a rampant Hearts team who totally dominated this first half but failed to score thanks to, at times, some desperate defending.

The second half was a much more even contest with the home side lifting their game and competing quite vigorously, especially in the midfield. Despite this improvement in their play Kennoway never really looked like scoring with only one shot that was anywhere near the Hearts goal and Robertson saved it with ease. Hearts on the other hand continued to push forward and forced the home keeper to make several telling saves.

The most significant of these was from Matthews, who having dribbled past three players, was clean through only to see his shot well saved by the Kennoway keeper.

The game finished all square with the home team being the happier with this result. Hearts did not play badly but did not get any breaks and were also subject to some questionable refereeing decisions which definitely influenced the out come of this game.

Hearts: Robertson; Kidd; Dailly; Sheach; Murray;Ritchie; Forsyth; Anderson; Provan; McAinish;Matthews.
Subs: Grubb; Peebles; B.Hastie; Farrell; Richards.

H.Tartan A.F.C v Cupar Hearts 2-0

11th March 2000

On a perfect day for football, with the sun shining and no wind to speak of, both sides started this game at 100 m.p.h., the play swung from end to end with good chances being created by both.

Hearts showed some good play in the early part of the match with Anderson coming closest with a well struck shot cannoning off the goalpost in the 10th minute. Then Ritchie had a great chance when he was clean through but his shot flew well over the bar.

Laing in the Hearts goal also had to be alert when he made a great save, in the 31st minute, by diving to right and pushing the ball round the post from a well struck shot.

The Cupar team made numerous good opportunities but the Tartan keeper was in inspired form and dealt easily with everything we threw at him, he was ably assisted by his defence.

The half finished 0-0 with Hearts feeling justifiably that they should have had at least one goal that their good play had merited.

The second half got off to another frantic start with both sides desperate to get the vital opener. The breakthrough came, against the run of play, ion the 73rd minute when Tartan broke from defence, crossed the ball in from the right the centre hit a great shot which Laing saved well, palming the ball away only for the incoming left-winger to meet it at the back post and blast it into the net 1-0.

Hearts now threw all caution to the wind and piled forward chances galore but could not break down the home defence which stood firm and their keeper was in fine form.

Then with just minutes to go Tartan again broke quickly from defence to attack getting the ball in the box, a scramble ensued, we failed to clear the ball and their player prodded home the final nail in the coffin.

Minutes later the final whistle went with Hearts still trying valiantly to score without success. This was a good game of football and a fine display from both sets of players.

Though Hearts were disappointed they must now pick themselves up for they still have lots to play for this season, starting next Saturday with the quarter final of the Fife Cup, home to Kennoway K.O. 2.00p.m.

Hearts: Laing; Kidd; Dailly; Sheach; Murray; Ritchie;Grubb; Anderson; McAinish; Matthews; Provan.
Subs: B.Hastie; Peebles;es; M.Hastie; Farrell; McDonald.

Cupar Hearts v Kinglassie 1-2

21st March 2000

On Tuesday 21st march, Hearts played their first competitive game under the lights when they met Kinglassie in a league fixture at Duffus Park.

The weather was rather wet but the action on the park was red hot, with both teams setting a cracking pace and end to end stuff. Both sides created chances, with Hearts making most of the early running and several good shots on target. McDonald in the Hearts goal had to be alert to deal with a couple of direct strikes from the Kinglassie side.

The half finished all square at 0-0.

Hearts stepped up a gear as the second half began, pressing the Kinglassie defence back, eventually paying off when a well worked move down the left, found Anderson on the touch line, who then chipped it back for Peebles to head it past the keeper. 1-0.

Minutes later, Hearts thought they had increased their lead , when Peebles scored again, only for it to be disallowed as offside. Baffling as Kinglassie had two defenders on the goal line.

Cupar was quickly punished for this as Kinglassie's first move up field, when their forward stotted home a good cross from the right. 1-1.

Although stunned, Hearts continued to look for the winner but again were shocked when Kinglassie clinched the match. A sudden breakaway found a Kinglassie player launching a long shot from outside of the box, and although it looked as if it were going over, dipped under the bar to make the final score 1-2.

A disbelieving Hearts side trooped off the park after a game which they had dominated throughout.

Hearts: McDonald: Kidd: Sheach: Murray: Dailly: Peebles: Grubb: Anderson: McAnish: Matthews: Provan.
Subs: Ritchie: Rann: Houston: B.Hastie: Paton.

Cupar Hearts v Cowdenbeath 3-3

25th March 2000

Cupar entertained Cowdenbeath in this league match at Duffus Park.
Cowdenbeath shot out of the blocks and took the game by the scruff of the neck. They dominated the early part of the game when they scored the opening goal in the 12th minute, when a well placed free kick found their number 10, who had an unchallenged header, straight into the Hearts goal. 0-1.

Hearts tried hard to get back into the game, but it was not until the later stage of the half when they grabbed the equaliser, when Sheach broke out of defence, charged down the right side and placed a cross to McAnish who had time to control the ball before striking a sweet shot into the back of Cowdenbeath's net. 1-1. Hearts finished the half all square, but fortunate to be still in the game.

The second half began with Hearts showing more endeavours, but still looked like a team playing for the first time together. Cowdenbeath however were playing some showroom football and deservedly took the lead again in the 59th minute, when a well taken corner ball was headed firmly home. 1-2.

Ten minutes later they increased their lead, when the fresh Cowdenbeath sub made short work of a loose ball, which found the Hearts, defence napping 1-3.

The Hearts team was given an injection of fresh blood with a double substitution and slowly the game began to change as they increased the tempo, pushing forward and creating chances, one of which resulting in a penalty when Matthews was bought down in the box, who picked himself up and made sure of his shot on goal. 2-3.

Suddenly the home team had their heads up, charging down the park, putting the Beath defence under pressure. Then with 5 minutes remaining, a scramble in the box found the equaliser as the ball crossed the line unchallenged.
3-3.

The Cupar side now pressed forward looking for the winning goal, and although there were a few chances, the score remained at 3-3 when the final whistle blew.

A disappointing performance from Hearts, but credit to their fighting spirit as they returned from the brink of defeat to salvage a draw against Cowdenbeath who played some excellent football.

Victoria Rovers v Cupar Hearts 2-1

1st April 2000

Hearts fell at the first hurdle in the defence of the Kingdom Cup, which they had won last season, when they travelled to Kirkcaldy to take on Victoria Rovers.

Hearts made some dramatic changes to their playing formation also in their players and for most of the first half it looked as if this was the answer to their recent shortcomings. They started well, the passing was crisp, off the ball movement was good, they players were encouraging each other and they were creating chances. However they still found it difficult to produce the goods when in sight of the goal.

Several times Hearts were clean through but could not convert or even ask the Vic goalkeeper to save. However at the opposite end of the pitch, McDonald, the Hearts keeper was forced to make a spectacular save, when the Vic No.11 struck a well taken free kick on the edge of the box, causing McDonald to dive to the right hand post and avoid an early deficit.

The deadlock was broken when Hearts took the lead in the 30th minute. Ritchie took a corner from the left, across to the back post to find Proven's head who neatly tucked it away into the Victoria goal. 0-1.

The Cupar side continued to press for more goals but it was Rovers turn to defy the run of play as they broke from midfield with some slick passing, to set up their forward who met the ball on the volley to beat the keeper all ends up. The half finished just two minutes later, with Hearts unfortunate not to be in front. 1-1.

The Rovers started the second half with a bang dominating the first 15 minutes. Hearts stood firm and just when it looked as if they had weathered the storm, Rovers took the lead when a long through ball from their defence found the Rovers centre who stripped through the Hearts defence, to beat the Hearts keeper with a well taken shot. 2-1.

A few minutes later Rovers were reduced to 10 men when their number 10 was sent off for violent conduct. Hearts now piled forward looking for the equaliser finding the net only for the referee to call it offside.

The home defence and especially the keeper did extremely well to hold off the Hearts onslaught. Hearts made plenty of chances but again failed to take advantage.

Rovers held on for a great victory over a Hearts, which had shown great improvement over recent performances.

Ballingry 1 - Cupar Hearts 0

8th April 2000

Hearts were away at Ballingry on Saturday 8th April for a league game.
Right from the start, Hearts were playing bright and attractive football. Their passing was quick, crisp and effective, they were playing with great spirit and all players were involved.

Hearts completely dominated the first 45 minutes, making numerous chances to take the lead. They rained shots at the home goal without really threatening. The nearest was a Brian Paton header which came off the crossbar.

The half finished all square but Hearts should have been several goals in the lead, but this recent failing infront of goal continues to dog Hearts. That said, Hearts first half performance was some of the best of the season.

The second half again saw Hearts playing good attacking football pressing the home team into their own half

Then suddenly with Ballingry's first attack, they scored. Their forward collected the ball on the edge of the box and hit a well placed shot into the corner of the net, leaving the Hearts keeper stranded.

Shortly after this Hearts were reduced to ten men when Paton was sent off. Still this did not diminish Heart's efforts to get back into the game. In the 80th minute Mike McAinish collected the ball on the left, ran across the home defence before unleashing a great shot which banged off the post.

Hearts were trying everything they could to get the vital goal, they had corner after corner but still could not convert.

They continued right to the final whistle and even in the last seconds of the game had a great chance when sub Matt Hastie crossed well from the right. Mike McAinish was in the clear and made a good header but it went straight at the keeper.

This seemed to epitomise the luck that Hearts have had of late. They deserved more from this game but their display of great endeavour, skill and spirit will hopefully see them turn the corner soon.

Kettle UTD 1 - Cupar Hearts 0

Tuesday 11th April 2000

There has always been great rivalry between these two teams, and this was no exception. Cupar started brightly, playing uphill, were making some slick passing moves and creating plenty of chances without being able to convert any
Kettle were also playing well but the Hearts defence stood firm.

So as the half time whistle blew, the score remained 0-0.

Within 10 minutes of the second half, Kettle made the break, after being awarded a free kick 10 yards outside the box. Kettle's centre back struck a stunning shot into the top right hand corner of the goal. It was a great goal and the best I have seen this season.

Hearts now piled on the pressure but try as they might they could not score. The Kettle keeper and defence played well and even when they were reduced to 10 men it made no difference to the outcome of the game.

Hearts had played well, tried hard and despite some excellent outfield play, just could not convert into goals.

Cupar Hearts 1 - Norton House 0

Thursday 13th April 2000

After a delayed start, the home side showing several changes in the side and positions, began well showing grit and determination against a skilful Norton side. The Hearts players were matching them in every department of the game, never giving Norton time to settle or build up a head of steam.
Midway through the half Hearts took the lead when they scored a glorious goal when Brian Ritchie collected the ball on the left wing, cut inside and hit a high looping shot which completely deceived the Norton keeper and dipped into the net at the far corner.
Hearts defended brilliantly and stood firm for the rest of the half.

The second half saw Norton make every effort to get back into the game but were unable to get a goal thanks to Hearts side which showed great spirit, teamwork and resolution, they were stalwarts in the defence of their lead and denied Norton of every chance.

The Hearts players deserved everything to got from this game against a very good Norton side.

Eastvale 1 - Cupar Hearts 2

Saturday 15th April 2000

Hearts started this 2nd round of the Caledonian cup at Eastvales ground, by playing some good attacking football and had several chances, but with an Eastvale keeper on top form Cupar failed to strike any early blows.
Then with about quarter of the half played, Hearts went infront from a corner on the left taken by Ritchie which was met on the back post by Brian Hastie who bulleted it into the net with a great header.

Cupar continued to have most of the play and looked more than likely to maintain their lead when in the last minute of the half, Cupar was caught with a sucker punch when Eastvale snatched an equaliser when the Hearts defence failed to clear a cross at the back post and the home side forward to bang it into the net.

The half finished all square much to the displeasure of the Hearts management, and we also lost Houston after a reoccurrence of an old knee injury.

The second half began with Eastvale playing the better football and they made several clear cut chances to score but Rann, in the Hearts goal, made the saves look easy. Within the space of a few minutes Hearts had to make two further substitutions because of injuries. Hearts were in some disarray at this stage and Eastvale were taking full advantage.

The Cupar side were still in the game, thanks to their defence and keeper. Gradually Hearts came more into the game and regained their composure. The match seemed destined to go to extra time when with 10 minutes to go Hearts took the lead.

In a goalmouth melee, the home keeper fumbled the ball allowing Brian Ritchie to take advantage and pop the ball into the net. Hearts held on for victory in a match that they should have had sown up by half-time, but by the end could only be sewn up by the odd goal.

Hearts: Rann: Houston: Forsyth: Murray: Dailly: Ritchie: Anderson: B.Hastie: McAinish: Matthews: Provan.
Subs: M.Hastie: Kidd: Grubb: Peebles: McDonald.

Cupar Hearts 2 - BurntIsland 1

Tuesday 18th April 2000

This league fixture saw Hearts starting like a rocket, pinning the shipyard boys back into their own defensive area. The home team were moving the ball with quick passing, showing good movement and it came as no suprise when they took the lead. With 10 minutes gone Matthews broke free, going through one on one with the keeper before slipping the ball past him into the net.

Shortly after this they went further ahead when McAinish made a great run down the left, broke inside passed to B.Hastie on the right in acres of space, he ran on and dipped the ball over the advancing keeper. Then, just when Hearts were running rampant and looking like increasing their lead, they were caught with a very soft goal. A mix up in the home defence allowed a poorly hit shot to trundle over the line to take the score at half-time 2-1.

The second half was a much more even contest with the Shipyard boys upping the pace of their game and at times putting Hearts under pressure. It was also becoming a very heated affair, with several bad tackles from both sides, a number of bookings and one sending off.

However Hearts held on for victory and took full points from the game, but they should have made this easier themselves by their early play.

Hearts: Rann: Kidd: Anderson: Murray: Dailly: B.Hastie: Grubb: Paton: McAinish: Matthews: Farrell.

Cupar Hearts 2 - Norton House 3

Sat 22nd April 2000 - McEwans Fife Cup semi-final

Extra Time & Penalties

On a beautiful day for football, these two fairly evenly matched sides gave their all for over 120 minutes of open play and then penalties.

Hearts, playing downhill in the first half, which began well, showing great spirit, and plenty of skill, they took the game to Norton. Their play in the early part of the half clearly knocked Norton out of their stride and it was Hearts who deservedly took the lead in the 13th minute.

Ritchie and Anderson combined on the right before the ghosted into the box, with everyone expecting him to cut it back, he took it on himself and slotted it past the suprised keeper.

Following this, play went from end to end with no team gaining the upper hand and at half-time, Hearts lead 1-0 and were worthy of this lead.

The second half had barely began when Hearts were a dealt a severe blow when Alan Forsyth was red carded for a second bookable offence, a harsh decision in light of some of the tackling that happened before and often that was allowed to go on unchecked.

However Hearts reorganised and with their back to the wall, they held Norton who were now playing with their tails up, before the unrelenting pressure eventually told. The equaliser came, when following a goalmouth scramble, the ball broke loose to an unmarked Norton player at the back post who dispatched it into the net.

Norton then tried hard to make their numerical superiorority tell and get the winner but this stalwart Hearts side stood firm denying them of every oppurtunity. Fulltime came with them deadlocked. 1-1

Now into extra time, with both sets pf players tiring, there were chances at either end but no further scoring in either half.

Next came the penalty decider, things started well for Hearts when their keeper Rann brilliantly saved the first two shots. Hearts scored with the first penalty but the second, unluckily came back off the post with the keeper beaten. Norton then scored with their third try, 1-1. Nortons keeper then saved the next shot from Hearts

Norton then scored one more before Hearts equalised. 2-2. The came sudden death.

Norton went first and scored then their keeper made a terrific save to end this contest in favour of Norton.
Hearts should be proud of their team, they gave a great display of spirit and courage, every player giving their all, and after playing for 70 minutes with only 10 men they deserve a pat on the back.

It was a great display by everyone and Hearts were unlucky not to go through.

Well done lads!

Cupar Hearts 2 - Rosyth Civil Service 0

Saturday 29th April 2000

The semi final of the Caledonian Cup was played on Saturday 29th April at Duffus Park with Cupar taking on Rosyth. The match started with Rosyth taking the initative trying to put the home side under pressure and indeed they made two very good chances which they failed to convert.

After the opening flurry Hearts began to string their passes together showing an increased pace, more movement and they forced Rosyth back into their own half.

Hearts were creating chances aplenty but the Rosyth keeper was in splendid form and was in fact keeping his side in this game.

Cupar eventually took the lead in the 30th min. when a great run by Forsyth who beat player after player and could have went down from several challenges but kept on going before slipping the ball on to Matthews who drew the keeper and slotted it into the net.

It was a lead well deserved and for the remainder of the first half Hearts continued to pummel the Rosyth defence but could not add to their scoring.

At the interval Hearts were ahead but only by their solitary goal which meant that there was still all to play for in the second period.

Rosyth again started with a bang causing the home defence some problems and almost scored when a great strike from them just crossed the bar. After this however Hearts took comfort and when in the 59th min. they extended their lead, Allan Forsyth rose majestically to head home a well taken corner by Ritchie, they never looked like loosing this match.

Cupar went on to make plenty more goalmouth chances but were unfortunate not to make the scoreline more emphatic. Credit must be given to the Rosyth defence and especially their keeper for keeping score respectable.

At the end Hearts ran out worthy winners, they had played very well against a stuffy Rosyth side. They will now play Norton House in the final.

Cupar Hearts 2 - BurntIsland Shipyard.
Scottish League Cup Final

Sunday 7th May 2000

At the end of the first half Hearts were leading 1-0 without really playing at their best.
However after an in depth discussion at the interval the Cupar side came out for the second-half firing on all cylinders.

They took the game to Burntisland pressing them back:their passing was now quick and decisive they upped the tempo of their game and it came as no surprise when they increased their lead.
It came in the 55th min. after some good interplay of passes up the left between Provan and Matthews the latter took the ball through himself and beat the keeper with a well struck shot.

The Final of the Caledonian League Cup was played at shore park Newburgh on Sunday 7th May, in front of a fair sized crowd, with Cupar having the bulk of support, the weather being perfect for football, sunny and with no wind.

Hearts started brightly making several good chances without really threatening the goalkeeper. Most of the early play was dominated by the Cupar side but gradually the Shipyard began to come more into the game as they strung their passes together and made several openings but none that troubled Rann in the Hearts goal.

Then when the game appeared evenly balanced and with only a minute or so to go in the first half Hearts got the breakthrough ,when from a corner by player/manager Ritchie "CHIPPER" McAinish rose majestically to bullet home the header into the net.

Hearts were now running the show and Burntisland were now looking quite demoralised. Cupar continued to press forward hungry for more goals, they never let their workrate drop and because of this they extended their lead, in the 70th min.

McAinish grabbed his second goal, again after good build up play Mike took the ball into the box and smashed it into the net, giving the keeper no chance. 3-0
Hearts who were now playing with real confidence, completely dominating the match and in the 81st minute Rabbie Matthews put the icing on the cake when he grabbed his second and Hearts fourth goal. From what looked like an impossible angle wide on the right, with everyone expecting a pass he fired in a great strike which beat the keeper at his near post. 4-0

Hearts played out the remainder of the game still maintaining their high standard and never allowed the opposition a look in.

This was brilliant and thoroughly deserved victory for Cupar Hearts, their second half display was as good as any all season. Much credit has to be given to the management team who changed things at the interval, well done lads.

Rosyth Civil Services 0 Cupar Hearts 2 After extra time.

Thursday 11th May 2000

On Thursday 11th May Hearts travelled to Rosyth for the second round of the Scottish Courage Brand Cup tie against Rosyth Civil Service.

On a good night for football Hearts took the early initiative and soon had Rosyth on the back foot, they made many good chances but due to some inspired goalkeeping and inept finishing no goals were forthcoming.
The second-half was very much more of the same with several clear- cut chances that the Hearts players could not convert, they hit the post, the bar, were cleared of the line a number of times, and again the Rosyth keeper kept all at bay.

Into extra time, with the light beginning to go, Hearts finally made the vital breakthrough, when with 3mins played Brian Hastie broke the deadlock with a well taken goal. This inspired the Cupar side to press harder and within another few mins went further ahead when Pete Kidd broke through into the box, drew the keeper and calmly slotted the ball past him and into the net.

There were further chances but no more goals.

A good win for Hearts that still keeps us in 2 cup competitions at this late stage of the season.

Star Hearts v Cupar Hearts 0-0

Saturday 13th May 2000

Saturday 13th of May Cupar Hearts travelled to Star of Markinch for this end of season league match.

On a lovely sunny day, perfect for football both sides failed to sparkle.
Neither club had any possibility of winning the league. Thus this game held little significance for either side and it showed in their play.

Cupar Hearts had without doubt the bulk of the play, and were playing the better football throughout the match but never really looked liked scoring .

There was no lack of effort from both teams but they both failed to show any composure in the last third of the park.

The outcome of this match certainly didn't please the management of Cupar Hearts and performances will have to improve if we want further success in the Cup Competitions.

Hearts: Rann; Peebles; Sheach; Murray; Stewart; Grubb; Kidd; Forsyth; McAinish; Matthews; Provan;
Subs; B Hastie; M Hastie; Wilson; Paton; Dailly.

Norton House v Cupar Hearts 0-3

Monday 15th May 2000

On Monday 15th May Hearts made the short journey to Leven to play Norton House in this league match.

On a perfect night for football Hearts began in a very determined fashion, it was quickly apparent that they did not intend to sit back and admire the Scottish Cup finalists and Fife Cup winners. The Hearts players chased and harried the opposition, plus putting together their own brand of good football.
Chances aplenty were being created but it was a piece of individual skill that eventually opened the scoring. Rabbie Matthews broke the deadlock when after some good passing he wriggled into the box, drew the keeper and beat him with a slide rule pass.
Cupar continued to keep Norton pinned back as they pressed forward and eventually they were rewarded with a rather fluky goal, Alan Forsyth was clean through but his shot looked to have been saved by the keeper but it somehow squeezed under his body and popped out again Chibber Anderson was the first to reach and he prodded the ball home.

At the half Hearts were worthy of their 2-0 lead.

The second half saw no relenting by the Hearts, they never let their pace drop and midway into the half Mike McAinsh struck the killer blow when he scored a magnificent goal when he received the ball in the middle of the park, he ran at the home defence before unleashing a terrific shot which flew into the net giving the keeper no chance.

More good football followed but no further goals. Hearts were worthy of their victory after a great performance.

Fair City v Cupar Hearts 0-3

Monday 20th May 2000

On Saturday 20th May we entertained Fair City in a league match. The match started with Hearts taking a cautious approach, weathering the early storm from City. Gradually they began to move forward and with their first real attack they scored.

Paton, on the left, put over a great cross for Matthews in the centre, the defence stopped claiming off-side and their keeper hesitated but Robbie did not and beat him with ease. Hearts were now running the game, creating plenty of chances and with 30 mins. played a repeat performance from Paton and Matthews again resulted in the latter getting his second goal.
Hearts held this lead till the half and merited it with a fine display, playing some excellent football.

The second half began with City pressing, they had raised their tempo and were making inroads on Cupar goal. Rann in the goal had to be alert and did indeed make several crucial saves. Hearts weathered this and came more into the game and began making chances themselves but were unable to convert any of them.

City then blew any hope of getting back into the game when they had one of their players sent off for threatening the referee. This changed the complexion of the game and City never really threatened after this and the game petered out till the final whistle.

A good victory for Hearts against a side which had beaten us early in the season.

Victoria Rovers 2-1 Cupar Hearts

Thursday 25th May 2000

Hearts travelled to Kirkcaldy last Thursday night to face Victoria Rovers in this Kingdom League fixture.

With Norton House all but past the post in the Championship race, these two sides were challenging for the runners up spot.
Conditions were near perfect as the home side kicked off. It was Cupar who were first to show, however when Stewart sent Kidd free on the left, the midfielder took the ball past the advancing keeper but Strachan appeared on the goal line to hook away his finishing effort.

Hearts kept up the early pressure McQuade was short with a headed back pass and McAinsh might have done better than drive the ball high over the cross bar with the goal gaping.
Against the run of play Victoria grabbed the lead mid way through the first half, Duncan swung a free kick into the visitors goalmouth, Callaghan nodded it back across goal, Hutton helped it on and Russell was at the back post to head home. Where was Cupar's defence?

Hearts were stung into action Matthews and McAinsh combined to open the home defence but the latters shot failed to trouble Brown in the home goal.
With half time approaching Cupar went further behind. A sweeping move down the right finished with Key driving the ball past Rann with the visitors defence once again all at sea.
Only a fine save low down at his left hand post kept Cupar in contention as Mr. Maskell brought the first half to an end.

Into the second half, Matthew got his head to a McAinsh cross but his effort went wide. Up to the other end and it was Rann to the rescue again as he tipped away a net bound Key drive. Brown then denied McAinsh as Cupar suffered another blow, Anderson received his second yellow card for an innocuous looking tackle and Cupar were down to ten men.

Victoria almost took advantage straight away when substitute McIntosh chested the ball down to Russell but his volley from twelve yards cleared Rann's cross bar.

In the dying minutes Hearts got a consolation goal when Matthews was tripped in the box, he slipped the resultant spot kick neatly past Brown. It was however too little to late.
